We would call such people the middle class, a term not much used before the later eighteenth century, though it had long been apparent that a tripartite description of society was a useful one and expressions like the 'middle station' or 'the middling sort of people' were. For centuries, the United States Constitution has been held up to the world as one of civilization’s greatest achievements. It has been exalted and extolled at home and abroad, emulated and imitated by countries in both hemispheres. In some broad sense, it has provided a foundation for our belief in man’s perfectibility and the possibility [ ]. It was this address that called into the arena Daniel Webster, Senator from Massachusetts, who, spreading the mantle of oblivion over the Hartford convention, delivered a reply to Hayne that has been reckoned among the powerful orations of all time – a plea for the supremacy of the Constitution and the national character of the union. We have no words for speaking of wisdom to the stupid. He who understands the wise is wise already.
